The former football president of Peru was acquitted of the murder case
After a long trial, Edwin Oviedo, the former president of the Peruvian Football Federation, was finally acquitted of the murder charges. His lawyer gave this information yesterday.
“Edwin Oviedo’s innocence has been proven,” Cesar Nakazaki, Oviedo’s lawyer, told reporters after the ruling by the High Court in La Libertad, northern Peru. The plaintiff could not present sufficient evidence, after verifying it, the court decided to acquit him.
Oviedo was accused of killing two trade union members in 2012 and 2015. They were shot dead. Both worked in the sugar trade in Oviedo. Public prosecutors sought a 52-year prison sentence for Oviedo, who has always maintained his innocence. Due to this case, Oviedo was forced to step down as president of the Peruvian Football Federation in December 2018.
Oviedo has been serving as the president of the Peruvian Football Federation since 2015. During his time, Peru got the opportunity to play in the World Cup for the first time after 36 years.
Oviedo was detained for 18 months before the trial. After that, he remained under house arrest for one and a half years. At that time, he was accused of being the leader of a corruption ring. He was also accused as the mastermind behind the murder of the two.
The former football president of Peru was acquitted in a high-profile murder case, clearing his name after years of legal battles and intense media scrutiny.
Oviedo ordered the killing of the two to quell a protest against him at a sugar company, it was alleged in court.
